La Flor Dominicana – Air Bender (Maestro 5.5” x 52)
Burn Time: 1 Hour 20 Minutes
Beverage of choice: Coors Light from a tap. (It was hot…I got the closest thing to water with flavor)
Released at the end of 2009, this stick is wrapped in an Ecuadorian-grown Habano wrapper with fillers and binder from the La Canela farm in the Dominican Republic. Litto Gomez has done it again with a wonderful smoke. From what I have read through various Internet resources, the name “Air Bender” originates from Mr. Gomez’s passion for martial arts. Each of the sizes is based on a Kung Fu warrior. I was gifted 2 of the Maestro 5.5”x52 cigars for this review. Thank you Ana.
The appearance is a medium shade brown, silky from oils, with zero visible flaws.
Two very thin veins run from head to foot on this well packed stick. It is dense, heavy and has no soft spots to be found after a few rolls between the fingers. A finely applied triple cap seals the deal on this well constructed cigar.
The pre-light aromas consisted of sweet oak and pepper which tingled the sinuses a bit. A cold draw test showed some resistance which I expected after noticing how packed it was. I got the oak and pepper taste on the lips as well.
Upon lighting I was greeted with a medium bodied treat that my mind registered as being earthy with very light hints of pepper. The first third had a bit of a wave in the burn line and produced creamy white smoke. The bright white ash held on both sticks I tried through the first third and on the first cigar, it fell off shortly after. The lingering taste after each puff reminded me of a strong cup of joe with cream and a bit of sugar. I welcomed this unique attribute that I do not regularly see in most smokes.
Upon entering the two-thirds mark on the cigar I started getting notes of leather, coffee, and pepper which were fuller in flavor than the first third. The burn line quit waving at this point and the draw opened up to produce a large volume of smoke. The ash is still continuing to hold strong so I decided to put this second stick to the test and see how far we can go….
Rounding the final third of the Air Bender I was feeling the nicotine kick. The medium bodied start was finishing at full throttle with strong notes of oak and pepper. The coffee and leather were still fading in and out making this quite complex. The burn line was starting to wave in the last 2 inches of the second smoke which could have been because of the 4” ash I was babysitting. During my final puff and last picture it did fall, luckily on the ground instead of my lap.
Overall, this is a great cigar with a wonderful construction. The Air Bender will definitely be in my top 10 cigars of 2010 and a contender in the top 5. I would recommend this stick to a beginner searching for a medium-full bodied smoke or a novice/veteran searching for something with lots of complexity.
